Sunny Beach Bulgaria

Bulgaria's most famous (and chaotic) resort sits on a beach where Black Sea northerly storms generate genuine surf, a wild contrast between the wall-to-wall tourist hotels and the waves rolling in to the beach in front of them.

Skill Level

  • Who it's for: Beginners
  • Why: Small, accessible wind swells in a completely flat enclosed sea

Hazards

  • Completely overwhelmed by tourists June–September
  • Jellyfish in warm months
  • The resort atmosphere is overwhelming, not a surf destination by any normal measure

Local Tips

  • Come in winter when the hotels are empty and the north winds generate actual surf
  • Nessebar ancient town (UNESCO) just south is extraordinary, 3,000-year-old walled city on a peninsula
  • Manage expectations, this is Black Sea surfing, not Atlantic surfing
