Beach breakIntermediate

OB is San Diego's most characterful beach, a free-spirited, independently-minded neighbourhood where the waves match the vibe: raw, unpredictable, and surprisingly powerful for a city beach.

Shape

Punchy, hollow beach break peaks, one of San Diego's most powerful beach breaks

Length

30–100m

Skill Level

  • Who it's for: Intermediate
  • Why: The sandbars shift regularly, the shore pound can be dangerous, and the wave has real power, not for beginners on bigger days.

Hazards

  • OB Pier, strong rips form alongside the structure
  • Heavy shore pound on solid NW swells
  • Shifting sandbars make conditions unpredictable

Local Tips

  • The Dog Beach end (north) often has the best peaks away from the pier crowds.
  • OB handles bigger NW swells well, when Windansea is closing out, OB may still have shape.
