Skill Level

  • Who it's for: Intermediate
  • Why: Sandy bottom and open beach make it forgiving, but the shorebreak can be strong on bigger swells.

Hazards

  • Powerful shorebreak on bigger south swells
  • Rips between sandbars
  • Limited lifeguard presence in the southern section

Local Tips

  • The northern end of the beach (Big Beach proper) tends to have the best-shaped peaks.
  • Pu'u Ola'i, the red cinder cone at the south end, is a 30-minute hike with spectacular views, worth combining with a surf session.
