Skill Level

  • Who it's for: Advanced
  • Why: Full exposure to open ocean swells, powerful sets, rocky reef, and a long paddle out demand advanced ocean skills.

Hazards

  • Very exposed to open ocean swell, sets can arrive unexpectedly large
  • Long paddle out from the shore
  • Rocky reef with strong surge
  • Cold water (13–15°C in winter)

Local Tips

  • Indicators only really fires when the swell is pumping, check the surf report carefully before the long paddle.
  • On a big SW swell all three Raglan sections can link for a ride that stretches over a kilometre, a once-in-a-season experience.
